From Philanthropy to Filmmaking, San Diego’s “Connector” Brings Stories to Life
Abby Boretto has long been a name synonymous with impact in San Diego. Known for her roles as a philanthropist, civic volunteer, and Mrs. California All-Star United States 2021, Abby recently took on a new adventure that merges her love of storytelling with her passion for community connection: filmmaking. Her debut documentary, The Ring and the Mountain, is an intimate exploration of her father’s life—a young Marine pilot with a bright future whose story ended too soon. Abby uses the art of film to piece together a man she never met, inviting audiences to join her on a deeply personal journey of discovery and remembrance.
A Passion for People and Community
Abby’s career began in the hospitality industry, where she thrived in fast-paced restaurant and hotel management. “I love connecting with people, and hospitality felt like a perfect fit,” she recalls. However, as she transitioned to focus on raising her children—Tabatha, Lucy, and Huey—she found a new purpose. Abby became a full-time volunteer, channeling her passion for service into local schools, charities, and organizations across San Diego. Now, with her children grown, Abby’s impact has expanded to encompass all facets of her community involvement, from her active role on nonprofit boards to her newest calling in film production.
When asked what she loves most about her journey, Abby lights up: “It’s the people. I never imagined all these twists and turns, but each new path has introduced me to incredible people and experiences I never would have known otherwise.”
Celebrating San Diego and Its Stories
Abby’s roots in San Diego are deep, and her love for the area shines through in everything she does. She fondly recalls cheering her daughter Lucy on at Aubrey Park and enjoying the charm of San Diego’s blend of urban and natural beauty. “I love that I live in a place where there’s so much to do and yet I feel surrounded by nature. It’s the best of both worlds,” she says.
One of her biggest passions is supporting Friends of Poway Senior Center, where she serves on the Board of Directors and contributes to the ReRuns Resale Shoppe, a vital fundraiser. “San Diego is full of nonprofits doing wonderful things, but the Senior Center holds a special place in my heart,” she shares.
A Life of Learning and Giving Back
For Abby, the journey is never complete. “I believe every person you meet is part of a season and has a reason in your life,” she says. “It’s the people who inspire me to be better.” Her advice to others? “Know your audience—and always listen to understand, not just to respond.”
And for a woman whose life is so full of connections, her ideal weekend is refreshingly simple: a sunny San Diego day, quiet roads, and an effortless parking spot. “That’s my kind of day!” she laughs.
When she thinks of the word “home,” three words come to mind: “Mine, Sanctuary, Comfortable.” It’s a reminder that, even as her influence reaches far and wide, Abby’s heart is always with her family, her community, and the place she calls home.
Abby Boretto’s story is one of kindness, curiosity, and an unshakable commitment to making a difference. Whether she’s telling her father’s story on film, volunteering, or lending her voice to a community cause, Abby continues to touch lives in San Diego—and she shows no signs of slowing down.
