Kim Richards: Healing Motherhood
The Story of Caring for Mama
For too many women, the postpartum experience is marked by exhaustion, loneliness, and the overwhelming weight of new responsibilities. While baby showers and birth celebrations flood in before delivery, the care and support for the mother often dwindle in the crucial months after. This is the gap that Kim Richards, a San Diego native and entrepreneur, is determined to fill.

Richards, a mother of two, knows firsthand the challenges new mothers face. “After I had my first daughter in 2018, I realized how much focus was placed on the baby—but not the mother,” she says. “I had support, but even then, I felt like there wasn’t enough care directed toward me. That experience stayed with me.”
With a background in public relations and a passion for community engagement, Richards had already spent years shaping brands and leading initiatives in education and STEAM programs. But after stepping away to start her family, she found a new calling—one that felt deeply personal. In 2024, she launched Caring for Mama, a company dedicated to providing curated postpartum care packages designed to nurture, comfort, and celebrate mothers during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.
The mission behind Caring for Mama is simple yet revolutionary: to ensure that mothers receive the same level of care, love, and support that their newborns do. Richards carefully sources organic, nourishing products from local, women-owned businesses, ensuring that every package feels like a warm embrace. “I want moms to open a package and feel seen, feel valued,” she explains. “This isn’t just about self-care products—it’s about recognition, about saying, ‘Hey, you matter, too.’”

Her approach is deeply rooted in empathy and community. Every package is thoughtfully designed with postpartum recovery in mind—teas to soothe, snacks to nourish, and self-care essentials to provide moments of relief amid the chaos of early motherhood. “Women shouldn’t have to ask for support—it should be freely given,” Richards says. “That’s the culture I want to help create.”
Richards’ journey into entrepreneurship isn’t new. She founded her first business, KDR PR, in 2011, leveraging her expertise in communications to serve clients in education and public policy. She made her mark, networking her way into building the STEAM education movement in San Diego, even speaking on global platforms in New York and Doha. But while her career thrived, she eventually made the conscious decision to slow down and prioritize her family—a decision that would later inspire her return to business with a newfound purpose.
Now, with Caring for Mama, Richards is not just selling products—she’s reshaping the conversation around postpartum care. Through her company’s online platform, she shares resources, stories, and encouragement for mothers navigating the early stages of motherhood. And as her packages ship out across the country, she hopes to shift the culture of postpartum support, one thoughtful gift at a time.
“Every mother deserves to feel cared for,” Richards says. “This is just the beginning.”
